Palenque, Colombia is a place I discovered after a conversation with a local bartender on my second day in Cartagena. He told me it’s a place I shouldn’t miss during my trip, so I rearranged my plans and I’m so glad I did! Nestled in the heart of Colombia, Palenque is a vibrant cultural hub that’s brimming with history, tradition, and adventure and should definitely be on your list when visiting Colombia. Just a short ride from Cartagena, this historic town Is where every turn presents an opportunity to learn, discover, and connect with a community that’s proud of its heritage. Palenque, known as the first free town for Africans in the Americas, stands as a living testament to resilience and survival. Day trips from Cartagena to Palenque (about a 1 hour drive) can offer unique opportunities to dive into the heart of this historical town. These trips, however, can be costly for solo travelers, especially if no one else happens to be going on the day of your excursion.

It’s a hidden gem, remarkably less crowded, but that can also make planning trips a bit trickyβyet that’s part of what makes the adventure all the more memorable. Instead, I found a great alternative: hiring a personal driver. The service was more intimate and gave me flexibility with my schedule. When I visited, my driver, Eduardo, coordinated a private solo tour of Palenque, which included lunch and a mural tourβall for $60. The icing on the cake was that he also invited a friend, a Palenque native, who provided an in-depth history lesson about the town and arranged for us to watch a traditional dance performance.
